Help and FAQ
Answers to what Bookshelf readers ask us most. Can't find yours? Email [email protected].
The basics
Can I read books inside Bookshelf?
No. Bookshelf is a reading tracker, not a reader or a store. You read on paper, on your e-reader or in your audiobook app, and log your progress in Bookshelf. If you read on a Kobo, Kobo sync can log it for you.
How do I log my reading?
Open the book and add an entry with the pages you read, or the minutes you listened for an audiobook. You can also start the Reading Timer when you sit down to read and save the session when you stop.
How do I fix or delete a reading session?
Open the book and tap the session in its list of entries. You can change the pages, time and date, or delete the entry.
Why isn't a book I finished in my statistics?
A book counts as finished once it has a finish date and is on your Finished shelf, or on one of your own shelves set to the Rating behaviour (Settings, then Shelves). Books on your Wishlist are left out of statistics unless you pick the Wishlist shelf in the statistics filter.
Your library
A book has the wrong page count, title or cover. How do I fix it?
Open the book and use Edit Book to correct your own copy straight away. Then tap ⋯ and choose Report a problem, so the details are fixed for everyone who adds that book.
I have the same book twice. What should I do?
Imports skip books that are already in your library, but the same book can arrive twice as two different editions. Keep the copy you want and delete the other from its book page (Delete book). Your sessions, quotes and notes stay with the copy you keep.
How do I import from Goodreads, StoryGraph or Bookmory?
Go to Settings, then Import, and choose the app you are coming from. The screen shows how to export your library there. Importing is free, and books you already have are skipped.
How do I export or back up my library?
Go to Settings, then Export your library. You get a zip of spreadsheets you can keep, or import into another Bookshelf account.
Account and Premium
Is my library saved if I change phones?
Yes. Your library lives in your Bookshelf account, not on the phone. Sign in with the same account on the new phone and everything is there.
I have Premium. How do I get it on a new phone?
Sign in with your Bookshelf account, go to Settings, then Subscription, and tap Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple ID or Google account you bought Premium with.
How do I change the app's language?
Bookshelf opens in your phone's language when it is one of its ten: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Latvian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese and Russian. To pick a different one, go to Settings, then Customize.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings, then Edit Account, and tap Delete Account. This permanently deletes your library, reading history and profile. If you have Premium, cancel the subscription in your App Store or Google Play settings too; deleting the account does not cancel it.
Kobo sync
How do I connect my Kobo?
Kobo sync is part of Premium. In the app, go to Settings, then Kobo Sync, and tap Generate token. The full setup guide, including installing the small add-on on your Kobo, is on our Kobo sync page.
Kobo sync logged something wrong. How do I fix it?
Edit or delete that entry on the book page, like any other session. If a book keeps syncing wrong, email us with the book's title and we will look at it.
Still stuck?
Email us and a person will reply. Telling us your phone model and the app version (Settings, at the bottom) helps.
